Rahat Indori, who was a noted Urdu Poet, passed away on Tuesday at an Indore hospital. He was diagnosed with the Coronavirus and suffered two heart attacks in the hospital. This was stated by the doctors who were treating him.
Rahat Indori Birth and Early Life:
Rahat Indori’s birth name was Rahat Quereshi. He was born on 1st of January in the year 1950 in Indore. His father’s name is Rafatullah Quereshi and his mother’s name is Maqbool Un Nisa Begum. His mother was a housewife and his father was a worker in a cloth mill.
Rahat Indori studied in Nutan School and completed his graduation from the Islamia Karimia College in Indore. His post-graduation was from Barkatullah University in Bhopal in 1975. This was done in Urdu literature.
He was awarded a Ph.D. in literature from the Bhoj University in Madhya Pradesh in 1985. The thesis was ‘Urdu Main Mushaira’.
Personal Life of Rahat Indori:
On 27th May, 1986, Rahat Indori got married to Seema Rahat. The couple had two sons and one daughter. He also married Anjum Rehbar, a poet in Hindi and Urdu language in 1988 but separated in the year 1993.
The career of Rahat Indori:
Before becoming a lyricist and a full-time poet, Rahat Indori taught the Urdu literature in Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya for nearly 16 years. He also had painted a number of Bollywood banners and posters.
Rahat Indori had been performing in Kavi Sammelans and Mushairas for the past 40 to 45 years. He was recognized internationally as an Urdu poet besides being a celebrated poet in India. He has performed multiple times in UK, USA, Qatar, Kuwait, Pakistan, Oman, Nepal, Bangladesh, and more.
He was considered to be a poet of the people and thus not to be read in journals but experienced is ‘soirees’. The audience was hooked to his poetry for hours at a stretch due to his style of delivery that was unique.
He had a couplet for every situation or occasion. The reach of this very popular Urdu poet could be gauged from the social media popularity.
According to this poet, poetry needs to be done in the generation’s language. He was against any kind of inequality that also included the inequality of the intellectuals. Pathos and pain were an integral part of the poetry of Rahat. According to him, his poetry reflected the pain of the world.
He wrote on issues that were contemporary like the status of women, globalization and also communalism.
Stint in Bollywood:
He had a successful partnership with Mahesh Bhatt and Anu Mallik in Bollywood. This did not last very long as he was not very happy with the scenario in the world of glamour.
In his last years, he was an independent voice who was able to mirror the voice of those who wished to talk against polarization in religion.
The storm Rahat Indori generated through his poetry continues to swell even this great Urdu poet has fallen silent.
