US refuse to join Global Effort to find Vaccine for COVID-19

COVID-19 : The Washington Post reported that US is alone in finding a vaccine for the COVID-19. This was in accordance to the decision of the White House in early July when US pulled out from the WHO (World Health Organization). President Trump feels that WHO is highly influenced by China and needs to be reformed.

On Tuesday, the Trump administration has said that it refuses to work with an effort that is ‘international cooperative’ to develop and also distribute the vaccine for COVID-19. This is because it does not want to be constrained by World health Organization or other multilateral groups.

There are quite a few nations that have worked separately and directly for securing the vaccine supplies. There are also some nations that have decided to pool their efforts to ensure success against this disease that has shown no geographical boundaries. 150 countries or more are setting up the COVAX  (COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access Facility).

With cooperative effort along with WHO, nations can take advantage of a portfolio of the potential vaccines to make sure that their citizens are covered quickly by the vaccine that is deemed effective.

According to the WHO, the governments that are in the process of making specific deals with individual makers of vaccine can benefit by joining COVAX. This is because it provide backup vaccines if the ones that are being made through different bilateral deals with the manufacturers are not successful.

Judd Deere, the spokesman of the White house said that the United States would engage international partners to make sure that the virus is defeated, but they will not be constrained by any multilateral organization that is influenced by China and the corrupt World Health Organization.

According to Judd Deere, the President will not spare any expense for ensuring a new vaccine maintains the Gold standard of the Food and Drug Association for the efficacy and the safety. This vaccine will get tested thoroughly so that it can save lives.

Contradicting this, Rep. Ami Bera, D-Calif said that the decision of the administration will hamper the ongoing battle to end the pandemic as this is short-sighted.

Bera tweeted that joining COVAX is a measure to guarantee access to the vaccine by the United States. Who develops this first does not matter. He added that the ‘go-alone’ approach of America leaves it at a risk of not being able to get the vaccine.

According to Tom Hart, the North America Director of the ONE Campaign, the decision of the administration along with the withdrawal of the U.S. from the WHO means that the United States is abdicating the global leadership of America in fighting pandemics.

Hart added that this could millions of lives globally at risk and also isolate the Americans from a vaccine that is effective against COVID-19.

AstraZeneca has announced that vaccine candidate has entered the last stage of testing in the U.S. The England-based company, Cambridge, said that the study will involve almost 30,000 adults from different racial, geographic and ethnic groups.
