KXIP led by KL Rahul registered a win of 8 wickets against the RCB, which was led by Virat Kohli in the IPL2020 31st match at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. KXIP were chasing a score of 172 and Mayank Agarwal, with 45 and KL Rahul together stitched an opening stand of 78. On the other hand, Gayle scored a good 53 off 45 balls and this was his first half-century in this season. Rahul remained unbeaten with 61. The only wicket for RCB was picked up by Chahar.
KXIP looked in total control of the game with 161 for the loss of 1 in 17 overs. They needed only 11 runs in 18 balls.
They managed to bring down this equation in the last over, and needed only two runs of this over. At present, KXIP have two wins in this tournament and both are against the RCB.
The bowlers of KXIP had done well in the first inning by keeping the RCB team to 171 for the loss of 6. By the time Villiers walked out on the field 16 overs were already bowled. The 2nd wicket fell in the 7th over. This is when Villiers was expected to walk out. The batting order was re-jigged and this might have caused the RCB soe runs.
Intent of the RCB at the start:
Aaron Finch was walking the track at every ball. This was even with the bowling of Mohammed Shami. Though he did not connect very well, his thinking was clear. He wanted to cut out on the swing and ensure protection for himself from the incoming ball that was troubling him.
Devdutt Padikkal also managed to make use of his wrists and twirling bat well. He fell in the fifth over to Arshdeep Singh. When Kohli came to bat, he hit 3 fours in the first 7 balls.
The intent was clear cut. They were going hard right from the start and not to rely on any miracles. This was going in accordance to the plan, but only till the tie Finch fell after 6.3 overs.
Villiers Batting Position:
Instead of Villiers, Sundar was brought in at no 4. Though he has proved himself but not done so in the IPL tournament. He could not make a mark and was caught after making 13 runs. Next to walk in was Dube, and not Villiers, as expected.
It was only thanks to Chris Morris that the RCB got to where they did eventually.
In the 18th over, Morris bowled 4 dot balls. Udana followed this with an over for 5 runs. KXIP had the situation well in control. This soon went out of control. KXIP had managed to clatter 35 runs in the 16th and 17th over. The next 2.5 overs were taken for scoring only 10 runs and also losing Gayle. Finally, confidence of Pooran in the ability for clearing the straight boundary meant they could be spared of another heartbreak.
