Microsoft Surface Duo Launched in the U

After an initial showing in September 2019, Microsoft’s Surface Duo is finally launching on the 10th of September in the U.S. Pre-orders for the dual-screen phone begun from the 12th of August. The much-anticipated phone was unveiled along with the Surface Pro 7, Surface Laptop 3, and the Surface Neo dual-screen tablet.

The Microsoft Surface Duo comes with a 360-degree hinge. It has two OLED displays, with dimensions of 5.6-inch and an aspect ratio of 4:3. The screens join to form a PixelSense Fusion Display of 8.1-inches, an aspect ratio of 3:2, and a resolution of 2,700 x 1,800 pixels.

The phone has an 11-megapixel camera in the front. This allows the camera to be used for selfies as well as video calls. Features included for photos are auto with low light, HDR, superzoom that goes up to 7x, portrait mode with depth control, panorama mode, and burst mode. The camera also supports 4K video recording, 1080p recording at 30 and 60 frames per second, HEVC recording, H.264 recording, and video stabilization.

The Surface Duo runs on Android 10 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC that has been optimized for dual-screens. This processor comes with 6GB RAM, with 128GB or 256GB of internal storage. The device is also equipped with dual batteries, with a total capacity of 3,577mAh that can be charged with the 18W power supply provided.

The Surface Duo does not come with 5G support. It does, however, support 4G LTE. Other options like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth have been provided. The device will also support USB Type-C connectivity. It also comes with sensors like the accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, and fingerprint sensor. The foldable phone does not have wireless charging or NFC capabilities.

The Surface Duo is priced at $1399 (roughly Rs. 1,03,000) for the 128GB and $1499 (roughly Rs. 1,09,000) for the 256GB.

Launch in India

The Surface Duo has been highly anticipated since the announcement of its launch. However, it seems unlikely that Microsoft will launch the phone anytime soon in India. The company does not plan to launch the phone in other countries for now. Users outside the U.S can expect the product to launch sometime next year, however, the company has not provided a timeframe for launch.

Microsoft wants to gauge user reactions and reviews before launching the Surface Duo outside the U.S. The Surface RT was launched by the company back in 2012. During this launch, Microsoft had produced more devices than could be sold. Due to this experience, the company wants to ensure that its approach toward customer demand is phased and measured. Due to this reason, Microsoft will first ship its foldable phone in the U.S and manufacture the product according to demand.

The reason for a delay in launch may be justified; however, it has left other markets disappointed. Moreover, the Surface Duo has a chipset that will be a year old, whereas users will expect the latest hardware from a phone that is so high end.
