Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) VS Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) snatched an unexpected ten run victory against Chennai Super kings (CSK). Now, KKR is third in the IPL2020 (Indian Premiere League) points table. CSK, on the other hand, are at the fifth spot. Rahul Tripathi was promoted to open and managed to repay the team management’s faith in him. He made 81 runs in 51 balls.

KKR choked the flow of runs and managed to get some important wickets after Shane Watson had hit his consecutive second half century. They were able to restrict this side led by MS Dhoni to 157/5. From five matches, KKR now are with six points. They have moved above Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) with a net run rate that is better.

On the other hand, CSK have four points from the six matches and there is a possibility of them sliding down further in the IPL table.

Faf du Plessis has three half centuries in the IPL2020 and he could manage only 17 runs in Abu Dhabi. He fell short of KL Rahul who is the leading run-scorer of this season.

CSK was completely outsmarted:

You can say the KKR had some gumption, the way they have pulled off this match. They had restricted CSK to only 67 runs in the final ten overs. 14 of these runs came in the last 3 balls, by then they had already lost the game.

Narine came on only in the 12th over but CSK did not cope at all. It was surprising that till that time Narine had not bowled and for him to start so late and finish bowling his four over’s was definitely astounding, especially more so as he is a spinner.

The few over’s from Varun Chakravarthy were aggressive and daring and managed to take the wicket of MS Dhoni.

The plan of the KKR right from the start was to use Narine in the latter half of the innings. The team realized that the conditions of the wicket favored spin bowling and due to this even Varun was kept for the last few overs. The wicket of Dhoni had put pressure on the CSK team.

Why did KKR choose to bat?

As in other seasons, this season also KKR always chose to field if they won the toss. This is due to the fact that they have batsmen who can bat for a decent score. These include Dinesh Kartik, Eoin Morgan and Andre Russell.

Rahul Tripathi took the opening spot of Narine and this worked well. As Tripathi had three fifties in four innings it was fair that he gets pushed up.

Russell bowled only at death:

Andre Russells’ role this season is to bowl only at death as he has already bowled 42 of the 60 deliveries only after the 16th over till now. At the time Russell came in, Dhoni was already out and CSK, even then, needed only 13 per over. Russell gave them no opportunity to hit. They could manage only three runs in that over.
