Kings XI Punjab

In the 13th season of the IPL tournament, in the 46th match you had KXIP winning the match with 8 wickets. This was their 5th consecutive match that they have won in this tournament.

Lokesh Rahul, the captain of the KXIP team, won the toss and elected to field, giving the KKR team a chance to bat first. The KKR team managed a small score of 149/9 in 20 overs. There was a good partnership of 81 runs between Shubham Gill, who made 57, and Eoin Morgan, who managed to make 40, but then, no other batsman could contribute much to the score.

Mohammed Shami, the pacer from Punjab, can be termed as a ‘pick’ of the bowlers with figures like 4-0-35-3. Chris Jordan and also Ravi Bishnoi bowled well for their team and managed to pick up a couple of wickets.

Man of the Match:

The KXIP team started off slow but the 100-run partnership for the 2nd wicket between Mandeep Singh, the opening batsmen and Chris Gayle, the veteran batsman, changed the game totally for KXIP. Mandeep played the role of an anchor and seem to have thrived when Gayle got going. He top-scored for his team with 66runs off 56 balls with 2 sixes and 8 fours. Mandeep opened the batting for his team for the second time in this tournament.

On the other hand, Gayle managed to score 51 runs off 29 balls but got out over of penultimate. He was awarded the ‘Man of the Match’ with 5 sixes and 2 fours.

Mayank Agarwal was missing for the second game in the KXIP team. The opening team of the previous game was told to open the batting. Rahul managed to time the ball with his normal fluency but Singh took some time in the beginning.

The opening partnership ended in 8 overs with 47 runs. Rahul was trapped by Varun Chakravarthy for lbw, and the arrival of Gayle could turn the tide in a decisive manner. Gayle stuck to his old method of taking the fielders out of the equation at the time when the ball was in his hitting zone and smashed Chakravarthy for sixes.

Shami bursting at the Top:

Shami struck quite early and bowled beautiful lines. Rahul Tripathi pushed and this seems to seam away after being pitched on-off. This was caught behind.

After two balls, Shami repeated this again and sent back Dinesh Karthik.

Morgan, Gill on Counter-attack:

Morgan and Gill seem to explode when Shami was given the 3rd over in the power play. This took him to 21 runs after he had given only 6 in the first 2 overs. Both these players continued in the same manner even after the power play. They punished anything that was full or wide. Gill matched Morgan with each stroke as the KKR team made light in early wickets.

This match saw KXIP team chasing a low total that was not too tough. The KKR team ran out of options very soon.
