Crab Gravy (Malvani Style)

Crab Gravy


5-6 medium-sized crabs (cleaned, claws and unshelled abdomen)

2 tbsp fish Malvani masala

3 tbsp onion (chopped)

½ cup of dried coconut (grated)

1 tsp garlic (minced)

¼ tsp turmeric powder

1 tsp chili powder

1 tsp lemon juice

salt (as per taste)

1 tbsp fresh coriander leaves (chopped)

2 tbsp oil


Place cleaned crab abdomens and claws in a large bowl. Add turmeric powder and salt, mix well and keep aside for ½ an hour to marinate.

In a non-stick pan, heat one tablespoon oil. Then add chopped onion, sauté them till golden brown.

Next, add the freshly grated coconut and sauté for 3 minutes. Also, add the dried grated coconut and sauté till brown. Allow cooling.

Next, put the small claws of the crab in a mixer to extract juices within them. Strain the juice into a bowl and keep aside.

Grind the fried coconut and onion mix along with garlic into a fine paste.

Take a nonstick pan, add some oil. Fry sliced onion in it till golden brown. Add the ground paste and cook for 1-2 minutes. Add Malwani Fish masala and chili powder. Also, add some water and salt and cook for 2-3 minutes.

Then add marinated crab claws and crab abdomen, mix well and boil with a cover for 3-4 minutes. Also, add the strained crab juice and cool well for 2-3 minutes.

Add lemon juice, chopped coriander and mix well.

Serve hot delicious crab gravy with rice.
