Chennai Super Kings (CSK) v/s Kings XI Punjab (KXIP)

Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) beat the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) with a wide margin of 9 wickets. The 3rd consecutive 50 by Ruturaj Gaikwad helped the team CSK get the massive victory. This match ended the hopes of the KXIP for qualifying for the playoffs. This match was played in Sharjah at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

Initially the CSK team floundered at the power play as the openers of the KXIP team, KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal led the team to a good 55 for 1. Rahul managed to make 29 runs and Agarwal made 26 runs. Soon, the CSK team turned the tables and with the quick wickets, seemed to control the match. This can be thanks to Lungi Ngidi who gave only 39 runs and took 3 wickets. The 62-run knock of Deepak Hooda guided the KXIP team to 153 for 6 wickets at the end of the decided 20 overs.

Chasing the score of the KXIP team, the CSK team started brillianly. They managed a score of 57 runs for no loss at the end of the power play. This was all thanks to Faf du Plessis who managed a good 48 runs. After the departure of Plessis, Rutu Gaikwad carried on with a good 62 run. He chased down the target with Rayadu’s help, who made 30.

Agarwal, Rahul re-unite at the top:

As known, Agarwal was side-lined in the last 3 games due to injury. He managed to mark his come-back with the four on the very first ball of Deepak Chahar. In the next 13 balls he hit 4 more fours before Ngidi could fox him. Rahul, after Agarwal, took more chances in the powerplay. He swished Chahar, Shardul Thakur and also Ngidi for boundaries. The end of the powerplay saw KXIP team at 53 runs for 1 wicket down. Rahul and Agarwal had scored 26 each.

The KXIP team seemed to have gone into a comatose with Ngidi removing Rahul. Nicholas Pooran nicked off 2 for 6 balls in the 11th over. Chris Gayle was trapped at 12 for 19 balls.

The KXIP team probably erred by not promoting Neesham ahead of Mandeep Singh. After Pooran and Gayle were dismissed, Jadeja was drafted into the attack by MS Dhoni.

CSK team sign off on a high:

Against the KXIP team in the last fixture, du Plessis allowed Shane Watson some space by hitting in the early exchanges.

The innings of du Plessis could have been cut short at only 5 if Hooda had hung on to the difficult catch.

Gaikwad was unable to find the gaps and was middling the balls. He was given ‘caught’ on 20.

Gaikwad finished the chase for the team with Rayadu, leaving the scores at 62, 72 and 65. This gave him an average of 51 in this tournament and this worked out the best for the player of the CSK team.
