There were a number of celebrities globally who joined the controversial Rajneesh Ashram in the 70’s and the late filmstar, Vinod Khanna was one of them. Most of them became sworn followers of this cult and disciples of Bhagwan Rajneesh or Osho. Those who are included in this list are Mahesh Bhatt, Parveen Babi, and also the late actor, Vinod Khanna. Tuesday is the 74th birth anniversary of this filmstar.
It was in the year 1975 that Vinod Khanna left his family and moved to Oregon after becoming a disciple of Osho. He left his wife and both the kids back in Mumbai. His elder son, Akshaye Khanna, was only a toddler at that time. He was unable to process why his father left them. He realized who Rajneesh was only after he was 15 or 16 years old.
Talking to one of the leading newspapers, Akshaye Khanna said that this father took the decision to take sanyas. This mean leaving everything including his family and this is, for sure, a life-changing decision. He admits that he did not understand this at that time since he was only five years old.
Akshaye Khanna adds that there must be something that moved him so deeply that he made the decision of leaving his family and taking sanyas. He feels that these types of decisions are made only when there is a kind of earthquake within you. This happens when you have everything in life and you feel that there is nothing more life can offer you.
Vinod Khanna came back only after the government of the US had disbanded the commune and everyone had to find their own way. It was not because Vinod Khanna got disenchanted.
Akshaye Khanna had respect for the spiritual leader even though his father had left them for this. He adds that he is not sure if he could go for sanyas but then, there is no stopping him in enjoying the discourses, respect his oratory skills, and also his way of thinking.
Vinod Khanna died in the year 2017 in April, at the age of 70. He was battling cancer. His debut was in ‘Man Ka Meet’ in the year 1968. This film was produced by the late Sunil Dutt. Vinod Khanna was noticed in the 1971 movie, ‘Mere Apne’ of Gulzar. In this film, he played the role of Shyam who is a disillusioned man.
In the year 1971, Vinod Khanna got his first break as a hero in the movie ‘Hum Tum Aur Who’. After that, he acted in a number of films that included hits like ‘Mera Gaon Mera Desh’ and Elaan’. In the year 1977, he made a debut in politics with the BJP (Bharatiya Janta Party) and also served as a minister in the government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
