Aamir Khan, the superstar of Bollywood, has managed to get into a controversy with his visit to Turkey. During this visit to Istanbul, this actor met the First Lady of Turkey, Emine Erdogan.
Khan had to visit Turkey to find locations for shooting for his movie, ‘Laal Singh Chhada’. This is a remake of an American comedy that is a classic, namely, ‘Forrest Gump’.
40 percent of this movie has been shot in Punjab, in India. It was decided by the production team to film the rest in some other location due to the ongoing pandemic.
The elements of the right-wing that is aligned with the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) expressed their anger at the meeting of Aamir Khan with the Wife of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the President of Turkey. Some others said about this meeting being blown out of proportion and will have no effect on the popularity of this Bollywood actor.
Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri, who is a supporter of the BJP, told Arab news that Turkey is known to be one of the most intolerant nations globally and Aamir Khan is one film personality who has always expressed his views strongly about intolerance. He visiting the house of the president of Turkey and having a cup of coffee with his wife has enraged India.
Agnihotri is also a member of the Central Board of Film Certification of India, feels that Aamir Khan should apologize for this ‘cultural diplomacy’.
According to Agnihotri, Turkey is responsible for sponsoring terrorism in India and the President of this country has ordered the arrest and also the prosecution of many dissenters. He says that even an ordinary man in India knows that turkey is considered to be an enemy. He does not believe that an actor like Aamir Khan, who is an enlightened artist and addresses many socio-political issues, can be ignorant.
Shatrughan Sinha, who is not only a Bollywood actor, but also used to be affiliated with the BJP, and is now with the Congress, does not agree with the views of Agnihotri.
Shatrughan Sinha feels that an intelligent actor like Aamir Khan would not do something to damage his image as a cultural ambassador of the country. He says there is no harm done if he had a cup of coffee with the First Lady of Turkey as he had not visited the country as a political representative of India but for work and that there was nothing wrong in paying a courtesy visit to the president’s wife.
He also said that it was unwise to make a political issue of a social visit.
Aamir Khan is one of the most beloved actors of Bollywood, but unfortunately, he has been accused multiple times of ‘anti-nationalism’.
A BJP lawmaker, Babul Supriyo, said that there was no comment from the government on Aamir Khan’s visit to Turkey and thus there was no need to comment on the right or wrong of this.
